How to Make Money as a Freelance Writer
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started freelance writing.
I started freelance writing once we started our blog, ClubThrifty.com, in 2011. I realized I could pick up random writing jobs and earn more than $50 per hour, and that was a lot for me considering I only earned around $4,000 at my full-time job.
It was then that I learned how to make money as a freelance writer. Over time, I started writing so much part-time that I was practically forced to quit my job to write full-time if I wanted to stay sane.
What exactly is freelance writing?
Freelance writing is when someone hires you to write articles for their website or publication. This is unlike blogging, which is where you are writing content for your own website or blog.
With freelance writing, you get paid for each assignment you complete. So to answer how to make money as a freelance writer, you get paid for the content that you write. It’s as simple as that.

When it comes to knowing how to make money as a freelance writer, some of the biggest struggles people face include knowing how to be a self-starter and accepting a lot of rejection. Most people are accustomed to applying for jobs and getting hired by at least one, whereas freelance writing can involve a lot of “no’s” before you get a “yes.”
A lot of freelance writers also struggle to stay on task. They enjoy the freedom of self-employment so much they find it difficult to work. Obviously, you don’t earn money if you’re not working.

What does a day in the life of a full-time freelance writer look like? How much time each week do you spend on work?
My kids are in school from 8 until 3:40 p.m., so I work while they are gone. I also work in the evenings sometimes after they go to bed.
In the morning, I get up and help them get ready and put them on the bus. I work all day and try to finish by the time they get home.
Honestly, I don’t miss having to commute to work, nor do I miss putting on full hair and makeup every day. I mostly work in my pajamas, and I prefer it that way.
