If you’ve been blogging for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard that “email is the way to make money from your blog,” right? It’s totally true that it is! But – I’ll be honest – that’s easier said than done a lot of the time!
When I started my blog, I was confident that I didn’t need to focus on email to make money. I was super happy to stick to ad revenue because back in 2016, Pinterest traffic was free, easy and plentiful. Once that all changed and Pinterest stopped making traffic easy, most bloggers finally realized that the only way to make money that you could control was through having an email list and maintaining a relationship with them.
Unfortunately, for a lot of blogger at that time, it was too late and they couldn’t recover from the loss of income. But the rest of us were able to see the writing on the wall moving forward – no matter how good and easy traffic is, you NEED to focus on email.
Read that again: you NEED to make collecting emails into a priority for you and your blog.

How to Get More People to Sign Up for Your Email List with Tracy Lynn
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you realized that email is the thing to focus on!
Hey everyone! My name is Tracy Lynn and I am the founder of Simple Living Country Gal and Declutter in Minutes.
I started blogging a little over three years ago and although I got off to a slow start I found my way about a year ago and have been growing steadily ever since. I am sure you are wondering how I “found my way” and that is why I am here to talk to you today. I can pretty much sum it up in one word.
Email. Email is totally where it is at!
And not just for me, but hands down it is the key to blog growth no matter what your niche or how long you have been doing this. I stumbled onto this magical growth strategy in October of 2017. Oh heck, who am I kidding?
I was told about the importance of email from day one but I kept putting it off and putting it off. At that time I was struggling just to keep up with my content and the thought of having to write something else every single week kept me away. Far far away.
Then one day in October I decided I needed to do something. My blog income was stalled and not nearly as healthy as I would have liked. I couldn’t get anyone to buy my things let alone anyone else’s and I knew I needed a plan B. (If you know anything about me at all, it is that I love me a good Plan B.)
So I dove head first into learning everything I could on writing newsletters, creating lead magnets and opt-in boxes and growing a dedicated list of fans. And then (oh, this is my favorite part of the story!) something crazy happened. A switched was flipped and not only were my eyes opened but my reader’s eyes were as well. I finally saw (almost instantly) the power of email and my readers finally saw (just as quickly) me!
Before I was just a blog and nothing more, but now I was a person, a real honest to goodness person, and my readers loved that….needed that. I went from a list that grew by 100 subscribers a month to a list a that grew by 1000 a month. And suddenly blogging got really REALLY fun!
If you take anything away from this today, let it be this. You need to make a connection with your readers and there is no better way to do that as quickly as you can with email. That connection, that one on one conversation is what will grow your list into something of value, please do not overlook it!
What are some strategies I can try to increase how many subscribers I get each day?
My number one strategy to grow your list is to focus on it every single day. Whether it be revamping a welcome sequence or creating a new lead magnet. Spend time daily on at least one aspect of email. This will at the very least keep to the forefront all the components of email growth so you do not let anything slip through the cracks.
Look at your site through your reader’s eyes and actually go through the entire process.
- Is your opt-in box noticeable?
- Is your lead magnet related to the post?
- Is the signing up process easy to complete?
- Is the lead magnet delivered quickly?
- Is the welcome email clear and fun to read?
- Is the welcome sequence delivered timely and to the correct folder?
Once completed sit back and ask yourself, would this process keep me coming back for more? If the answer is no or even maybe, then dive in there and make it better!
Why is email important? And why do you think so many people ignore it?
Like I mentioned above with my own story, I think bloggers especially new bloggers are so overwhelmed with all the writing that the thought of any more is enough to chase anyone away.
But the bottom line here is this, and you might want to write this down and post it where you can see it.
If you want to grow your blog into a business, a full-on money making business, then you need email subscribers to do that. Spend just 1 hour a day, too much? Then make it 30 minutes then! Just work on email every single day and you might just be surprised at the results.
What’s the biggest mistake a blogger can make with email?
You mean besides ignoring it completely?
Then I would say, inconsistency.
Listen, if you tell your mother you are going to call her every weekend to check in and you don’t… what will happen? She will get upset or even angry, right?
And when you do finally call a few weeks later, she just might be a bit withdrawn. Hurt by the fact that you did not keep your promise.
The same is true here.
Email consistently so your readers know you care. Know you feel that they are important enough for your time and attention.
What is something a blogger can do to grow their email list?
If you are ready to get busy and start growing, the number one thing you can do is offer your readers a gift to sign up. This is nothing new, I know, but it still surprises me at how few bloggers actually do it.
Most of my clients I work with just have a line that says “SIGN UP TO MY NEWSLETTER” and nothing more. And that right there might just be your problem.
In this world of privacy violations, your reader needs more before they will be willing to hand over their email address and give you a spot in their inbox. And that is also where most bloggers get hung up.
However, creating a lead magnet or FREEBIE is easier than you might think. Just put your blog post into a check-list and boom you are done!
And it’s those checklists that I find time and time again that convert the best for bloggers.
What is the #1 key to growing an email list?
Hands down, and this might just surprise you, the opt-in box. Listen, you can have the best lead magnet in the entire world, but if your opt-in box stinks no one will ever sign up.
You need a killer opt-in box that stands out and gets your reader’s attention.

Once finished I then customize a list of lead magnet ideas that fit specifically with their blog. But I don’t just stop there!
I also give a list of tripwire ideas and full product ideas as well. So now, my client will be able to not only grow their email list but jump-start their income as well!
