10 Purchases That Will Save You Thousands This Year – Stop struggling to save money and invest in these purchases that will save you thousands of dollars every year!
Alright, I’ll say it: saving money is HARD. trust me, it’s not just you that feels like no matter what you do, you can’t seem to get ahead with your savings.
If that’s any consolation, you really aren’t alone. So many of us struggle to find ways to save. But here’s where the problems start: we go too big, and then we burn ourselves out… and then we crash and burn and throw all of the money we saved to something that we are just wasting money on.
This is going to sound silly, but believe it or not, there are some purchases that will save you thousands this year. Yes, really! And maybe the best part is that none of them are expensive!
10 Purchases That Will Save You Thousands This Year
1. A reusable water bottle
Getting a high-quality water bottle like this Camelbak one will save you tons of money. And, as a bonus, it will be MUCH better for the planet, too! You’ll never need to buy a water bottle when you’re out and get thirsty at the grocery store. You’ll also never need to get plastic water bottles for your house, either. This is a BIG money saver!

2. A crockpot
I am NOT a great chef. Period! But I can honestly say that my crockpot has been the difference between my family having dinner at home or getting takeout every night.
As far as kitchen appliances go, this is the only one you should plan to get. Forget the stand mixer! Yes, it’s cute, but it won’t keep you from spending money on dinner every night.
With the crockpot you can literally get the cheapest cuts of meat, throw them in there before work in the morning and have tender, juicy, and delicious dinner when you get home! This is the crockpot meal plan that I use for my family!

3. A coffee maker
Laugh all you want, but seriously… having a programmable coffee maker is my shining beacon of hope in the morning! Having coffee ready, hot, and delicious when I get up saves me from the urge to spend at Starbucks or any other coffee shop on the way to drop my kids off at school.
It’s $30ish for a programmable coffee maker that will last years. That can save $2+ each day getting coffee from a coffee shop. Of all f the purchases that will save you thousands this year, this one is WELL worth it in my book!
Plus, you can make a ton of Starbucks recipes at home!
4. A serious phone case
Where are my phone droppers? *raises hand* Smartphones are EXPENSIVE. And if you drop it without a case, it’s broken. Which is a HUGE design flaw in my opinion, but Apple won’t listen to me… ugh.
A phone case that will protect your phone from drops is the best $20+ you will spend. That case will last close to a year and can save you up to $500 (or whatever your phone costs… it could be more than that!).
But make sure that it’s not just one of those cosmetic cases that are rubber! Those do basically nothing to protect your phone from anything but scratches and make it look cute. They’re worthless if you drop the phone.
5. Meal prep containers
Meal planning is a HUGE money saver. Especially if you or your spouse work and would usually buy lunch or dinner out. It doesn’t have to complicated, either. I make plain chicken on Sunday and pack that along with either rice, pasta, cooked veggies, salad, or anything else I have lying around in the fridge (true story).
This way, my husband never has an excuse not to bring lunch to work. These are my favorite meal plan containers since they have the separate compartments. It protects everything from getting mushy or nasty throughout the week.
They can be frozen, microwaved, thrown in the dishwasher, then reused again and again. They’re really great for picky-eaters too so that foods never touch. They’re one of those super versatile purchases that will save you thousands this year.
6. Programmable thermostat
This one was actually a hot debate that I have to clear up! There are some people who don’t think that this is one of those purchases that will save you thousands this year… and I disagree with them!
The issue with using these awesome programmable thermostats (you can get ones for less than $50 and they work great – don’t buy into those $200+ ones; they’re not necessary. Also, this is the exact one that I have and I love it!), is that people jump all over the place with them! They set them for 72 at night, but when they aren’t there during the day, they’ll drop it to 58 and then make it warm back up to 72 when they get home.
That’s NOT what you want to do. I spoke with my HVAC (the heater system) guy and he said don’t drop it any more than 4 degrees. The reason is that it takes more work to get the system back to the desired temperature than it does to maintain the temperature throughout the day.
Bottom line is that if you keep it at 68 at night and 72 during the day (just random number here), then that’s fine. But don’t make it 58 at night and expect to see huge savings. 🙂

7. A water filter
Ok, so I’m a hippie and I am VERY against plastic water bottles. They’re bad for the planet and they’re expensive!
But I know that drinking tap water can skeeve us all out a little! So that’s not necessary, either! A refillable water filter pitcher that you keep in the fridge is perfect in this case.
Yes, you will need to buy new filters for it. But it will be less expensive and wasteful than getting those one-time-use plastic water bottles!
8. Wool dryer balls
I am obsessed with my wool dryer balls! They are one of my favorite purchases that will save you thousands this year!
The wool dryer balls will replace dryer sheets in your house. Dryer sheets are just one more expense that you don’t need to worry about now. Plus, dryer sheets can damage your dryer over time making it less effective.
Dryer balls can also lower your dry time and lessen static cling in your clothes. Each set of dryer balls can last more than a year, so I’d say that they are one of those great purchases that will save you thousands this year!
9. Reusable rags
Paper towels are expensive. Especially when you have little kids who make big messes!
Getting plain old cotton rags to use to clean up messes and use instead of paper towels are a huge money saver. You can buy them, or you can make them yourself using old towels or t-shirts. These actually work better than the store-bought rags sometimes, too!

10. A drying rack
In the spring and summer, drying clothes outside on a drying rack is a huge money saver. Now, not only do you have the dryer going (which is one of the most expensive appliances because of the heat it puts off) but you also have a machine that puts off a ton of heat operating in months when you are trying to keep your home cool!
Using a drying rack isn’t difficult either. These collapsible ones are easy to just throw on the back porch during the day and then take down at the end of the day. No permanent eyesore in the yard anymore!
