Laundry is my favorite. I’m a weird person like that, but laundry is my favorite chore! Why? Because how easy is it to just throw all of the dirty clothes in the washer and voila! They’re clean!
But did you know that doing the laundry also uses some of the most energy of any chore in the home?
It’s true. Between the hot water, the dryer, the detergent, and the fabric softener, it can really get to be a big expense!
Here’s my biggest trick to getting the cleanest clothes, the whitest whites, and saving $200 a year.
Wash in cold water.
Yes, by pressing a button, you can save $200 a year. It’s really that easy. Think about it: you use between 17 and 27 gallons of water to wash a single load of laundry. That’s a lot of hot water! More importantly, that’s a lot of hot water that doesn’t even need to be used!
Why wash in cold water?
It’s better for your clothes.
Washing in hot water can stretch your clothes out. The cold water helps to preserve them in their shape for much longer.
It helps keep your whites white, and your colors vibrant.
It always seemed so natural to use hot water to get the cleanest clothes. After all, you use hot water to get the cleanest hands, right?
Hot water actually fades your clothes and sets in stains. I always thought that hot water was the best way to get stains out of clothes, but it actually sets them in and makes them harder, or even impossible to get out!
The same thing goes for colors. Ever wonder why over time, your bright clothes are looking dingy or dull even when they’re fresh out of the washer? It’s the hot water. It makes the colors bleed and fade.
It saves you money!
There are so many ways to save money when you do laundry, but just using cold water is the easiest and the most dramatic. There’s no prep work, there’s no mixing or measuring, there’s no guessing… you just press a button and BAM! Your cost per load of doing the wash is cut in half. No kidding!
Do I need a special detergent for cold water?
Nope! Any detergent that you see for “cold water” is just a slick marketing tactic to make you think that you need to pay more to wash your clothes in cold water. My favorite detergent is my homemade detergent. It works in cold water, hot water, warm water… everything!
Even if you use store-bought detergent, there’s no need to go crazy paying extra for “cold water” detergent. The regular detergent works just fine.
Still don’t think it’ll make a difference? You can compare your own washing machine and dryer and see what washing is cold water can do for your bill here!
