Are you looking for a way to make some extra money in your spare time? Have you considered selling printables on Etsy? Selling printables is a great way to turn your hobbies and passions into a profitable side hustle.
There are plenty of opportunities to monetize your skills by creating and selling digital items on Etsy. With the right strategy, you can maximize customer reach and create an ongoing income stream from this creative outlet.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry – setting up shop on Etsy is easy! The E-Printables course from Gold City Ventures will help you build a profitable Etsy printables business from the ground up.
We interviewed Cody Berman from Gold City Ventures to tell us about his journey with printables and how he created a profitable business and is helping others do the same with the Etsy platform.
How Did You Get Started Selling Printables? Introduce Yourself to Us 🙂
I first started selling printables when my friend (now amazing business partner) Julie told me that she had earned $6,000 after only 50 hours of work. As someone who was obsessed with trying new side hustles, I was sold. A few weeks later, I created my first few designs and opened my Etsy shop. The rest is history.
What Are Your Best Tips on How to Start A Successful Etsy Shop
Honestly, the best advice is to just start. I know that might sound cliche, but it’s true. If you create the worst printable ever, you might consider it a loss. But you know what? I can almost guarantee you that your next creation won’t be as bad as the first.
For those of you who have taken those first steps though, here are my biggest pieces of advice:
- Make sure there’s demand for your product: Before you spend the time to create a printable or digital download, make sure that people actually want to buy it. You can manually research using the “autocomplete” feature on Etsy, Pinterest, and Google and see if your idea pops up or use more powerful keyword research tools like eRank and Marmalead.
- Scout your competition: Looking at your competitors is another great way to get an edge. While I’m certainly not saying you should copy anyone’s designs, you can get a feel for the price, listing image style, title, description, so on and so forth. This can also help you decide if you want to create the printable in the first place.
- Market your product: Although it’s possible to get lucky, you should always hedge your bets. Instead of just listing the product on Etsy and walking away, you should also promote your products on Pinterest, in Facebook Groups, and wherever else might make sense. It’s just another way for customers to find and purchase your printables.
What Have Your Results Been From Selling Your Printables? How Much Can You Make From Selling Printables?
I started selling printables and digital downloads in 2019 and have earned tens of thousands of dollars in profit. Since I mostly focus on seasonal products, my Etsy income fluctuates drastically. This past Valentine’s Day I earned almost $1,000 in one week, but I’m typically in the $150-300 per week range.
But I’m no rockstar. This is purely just a side hustle for me that I spend a couple of hours on every week.
Some of our students have blown my sales out of the water. As of this writing, our top student just surpassed 11,000 sales in her shop and her sales continue to grow at an exponential pace. Another student recently posted in our Facebook Group that she paid her mortgage with her Etsy income … and she only started the course 6 months ago.
We’re constantly seeing new printable sellers earn hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars per month with their Etsy shop.

What Do You Think The Key To Your Success With Printables Has Been?
As I mentioned in tip #1 above, it’s important to make sure there’s demand for your product. To ensure this, I started creating seasonal printables in anticipation of certain holidays or events. For example, I’d start listing Christmas printables in November or Valentine’s Day printables in January. Since there was already a huge increase in search demand for these seasonal trends, it helped boost my sales right off the bat. I still use this strategy to this day and it’s continued to work for me.
Do You Need to Be A Graphic Designer To Have A Successful and Profitable Printables Business? Do I Need to Hire a Graphic Designer to Make Money?
Nope and nope. I am seriously one of the most unartistic people ever. Maybe not the worst but a solid 3/10. And believe me when I say that my first few printables were horrible. But, I kept trying and trying again and looking at competitors’ designs and after many iterations, I finally started to create products that people wanted to buy!
It did take me a while to find my groove, but I also had no guidance and was trying to figure out everything by trial and error.
But long story short, you definitely don’t need a background in graphic design and you don’t even need to have artistic tendencies. There are plenty of design programs that will help you to create printables that look good and sell.
How Much Does This Start-Up Cost? How Do You Make Printables For Free?
The great thing about selling printables is that it’s practically free to start. Well, you do have to pay a whopping $0.20 to list your first product on Etsy. But other than that, you can do everything for completely free!
You can complete your product research using free search engines like Pinterest and Google. You can create your printables in a free design program like Canva. And then like I just mentioned, you pay $0.20 to list each product in your Etsy shop and then pay a small fee to Etsy whenever a product is sold.
Making and selling printables is almost free. Your biggest investment will be your time.
Is There Anyone Specifically Who This Course And Printables Business Model Are For?
For anyone like me who is obsessed with creating passive income streams, selling printables is a great option. Unlike selling physical products, you only have to create your printable design once and then you can sell an unlimited number of copies with no additional time or money needed.
Plus, as you continue to add new printable products to your shop, your inventory will continue to grow without the need for a warehouse or fulfillment center. And unlike service jobs, you don’t just earn “X$/hour”, your income is unlimited when you sell your own products.
Pardon the infomercial sentence but I’ve *literally* made money while I was sleeping.
Is There Anyone Who This Course And Printables Business Model Are NOT For?
If you’re looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, then this side hustle is not for you. You’re not going to earn thousands in your first week and you’re not going to double your money overnight.
However, if you’re willing to learn the craft and put in the work then selling printables could become a legitimate income stream for you. It’s not unreasonable to earn $100 per week after a few months of running your Etsy shop.
