Need something to do? Go through this list of fun things to do at home when you’re bored and find something creative or productive to do!
Boredom doesn’t just happen to kids… it can happen to us adults too! Staring at the same dishes and 4 walls can be pretty monotonous. And super boring!!
If you are wanting to try something a little different, take a break from your regular routine and try one (or all) of the things on this list. From the free ideas to the not so expensive ones, I have the ultimate list of fun things to do that I know for a fact you won’t regret.
Fun Things To Do At Home
To start off this ‘fun’ list, let’s take look at all of the things you can do when you’re stuck at home alone. Later on in this guide, I’ll show you some “out of the blue” activities you can do with your friends and family!
1. Explore Different Genres of Music
Use your favorite streaming service or YouTube to explore different genres of music. It has never been easier to listen to a world of music than it is today.
Is there a particular band you’ve heard about but never sat down to listen to? Maybe you should start there.
You can also lookup your favorite musical artist and find out who their major musical influence was. Listen to those artists and go back and listen to who that artist’s influences are. It’s pretty incredible to hear what or who inspired someone’s musical talents.
Exploring music is a really fun activity that can take you all day or even become a life-long hobby.
2. Scrapbooking
Print out some of your favorite pictures from the entire year, go to your local craft store (think Michaels or Hobby Lobby) and buy some scrapbooking supplies to make a life scrapbook!
This is a really creative and effective way to preserve your memories whether it’s about life in general or a particular event that has happened. In the scrapbook, you can write down little jokes or stories that go along with the pictures.
If you have time, you could also make one for a friend or family member and give it to them as a fun DIY gift.
3. Learn a New Dance
As you might already know, YouTube is full of free tutorials. Do you know how to do the Dougie? What about the Renegade or the Cha-Cha-Slide? Spend some time learning how to dance. It’s a great workout too!
4. Read A Book
I don’t know about you but I could personally spend an entire week just reading books!
It’s at the top of my list of fun things to do at home but, if you don’t really like to read, go to your library and check out some graphic novels or coffee table books full of pictures. There are tons of really fascinating non-fiction books that are just begging to be explored.
5. Learn To Play A New Instrument
This is one of the fun things to do at home that might take a bit of financial investment but it might be so worth it!
Have you always wanted to learn to play the guitar or the piano? You should go and buy one (or find a perfect used one at a local pawn shop). YouTube has tons of free lessons on it and there’s also guitar-lesson books and apps on your phone you can use.
No matter how you prefer to learn, there is always a way to learn.
Fun Things To Do With Friends At Home
If you have a few people at home with you, try out some of these ideas. It doesn’t have to be so serious- the whole point is to have FUN! I mean, even if you don’t like painting, you could see who can make the funniest one.
1. Try a New Board Game
Do you have a board game at home that you keep saying you’ll learn to play “someday?” I know I do! Get your buddies or family members together and learn how to play it.
There are lots of games you can play with pen and paper too or you can search for fun new games to play with just a deck of cards.
The options are endless!
2. Painting
Next, get together and have a painting day. Be creative and paint something out of your head or load a Bob Ross video and paint along with him.
There are also quite a few new techniques out there that are really easy. Here are just a few you can try:
- Fluid Painting
- Watercolor Galaxy PaintingÂ
- Slime PaintingÂ
- Abstract Watercolor Flowers With Ink DropperÂ
- Geometric Painting with Tape
If you are still not feeling very creative, you can paint using stencils too.
3. Musical Jam Session
Are you and your friends/family musically inclined? Ask them to bring over their instruments and have a jam session or you can all learn to play a new song together.
That sounds like loads of fun waiting to happen!
4. Cook or Bake Together
This idea ends with some sweet rewards for everyone! Find a challenging and different recipe on Pinterest and make it together with some of your friends. Even if it turns out awful, it’s still fun to try it.
If you want to cook instead, maybe there’s a cuisine you’ve been too scared to try at a restaurant and found a copycat recipe to try at home? Now’s the chance to try it where there’s no pressure to like it or not.
5. Play Video Games
This final idea is a no-brainer. But, if you’ve already played all your games, go to the library and find a new one to download or borrow. Make the games more interesting by placing bets with some of your friends just for fun.
Video games can be really entertaining with the right group!
Productive Things to Do At Home
Sometimes being bored can be a great instigator to find something productive to do around your home. These ideas will all leave your home a whole lot better than you found it, that’s for sure!
1. Cleaning
I know, cleaning is just not fun! I’m not the biggest fan either but there are ways to clean that are a little more enjoyable. I sometimes like to throw on some crazy music and just dance around while I sweep or mop the floors.
You can even use this as an excuse to go to Target and buy some fresh-smelling new cleaners!
2. Organizing
While you are at Target, pick up some new baskets and organizers, then tackle one small area of your home that desperately needs to be organized. The best place to start is your closet!
This closet organization guide I put together has tons of tips and ideas- I sometimes apply these tips to other easy areas in my home like the food pantry.
3. Decorating
Spruce up your bedroom or redo the gallery wall in your living room. Sometimes, I like to take the opportunity and run to my local paint shop to take a look at all the paint samples and swatches I could potentially use throughout my home.
Being at home with nothing to do is the perfect chance to redecorate.
4. Budgeting
If you find yourself with some free time, use it to set and review a budget if you haven’t done so already. You will be so thankful that you did!
Have you been avoiding this because you are afraid of budgeting and have no idea how to do it? Pick up one of these budgeting books that explain everything you need to know in easy to understand language.
And when you do, don’t forget about including these budget categories. They’re a lifesaver!
Creative Fun Things to Do At Home
Finally, having some of that free time is a wonderful excuse to pick up a new creative hobby. Heck, if you love your fun new hobby so much, you should think about using it to set up a side hustle!
1. Knitting or Crocheting
This creative outlet can be a very affordable hobby, as long as you buy cheaper yarn. I’ve found lots of free tutorials online and have even found a fun local knitting class that meets once a week!
And once you get proficient at it, you can even start to sell your creations.
2. Decorating Sugar Cookies
Decorating sugar cookies takes a ton of practice, skill, and patience. Start out with some easier designs and increase the difficulty as you get better at it. Then, in the end, you’ll have some yummy treats to hand out.
3. Coloring
Adult coloring books have been a huge topic recently and with reason! They are an amazing and effective way to settle your mind in times of stress and still be a creative outlet to express yourself with colors.
5. Candle-Making
If you collect candles and tend to spend a lot of money on them, you should consider making them yourself at home! Buy a DIY kit at a local craft store and choose some of your favorite scents. Use a variety of different materials to play with color and essential oils to create your own custom scents.
There are so many creative ways to make candles!
