I have a bordering on unhealthy love of scents. Kinda weird thing to say, but there’s something so wonderful about them.
A while back, I did a post on rollerball recipes for essential oils and how much I’ve loved them. At the time, I hadn’t even tried diffusing the essential oils. I have candles for that, why would I need a diffuse to make my house smell nice!
Then out comes this horrifying report on how dangerous scented candles are! Not just in a fire hazard kind of way, but in a “they’re just full of chemicals that you shouldn’t be around, let alone letting them fill an enclosed space” kind of way.
It was then that I was prompted to check out diffusing.
I love using essential oils (but, no, I don’t sell them). As I’ve said before, essential oils has a lot of health benefits to offer. In the winter, I love to use thieves oil as one of my natural ways to keep my kids healthy.
I got this diffuser from a “get stuff for free if you’ll write a review” website, so for the great price of FREE, I got my first little diffuser.
It IS little, so it works perfectly for a bedroom, but probably not for a living room or downstairs. There are plenty of amazing reviews of literally hundreds of diffusers out there!

So here’s what you need to get started:
- a cold mist diffuser (I like this one)
- Distilled water (water that’s been boiled an allowed to cool so there’s no hard water gunking up your diffuser)
- Essential oils!
From here you just need to add the water to your diffuser, add the oils and enjoy! Diffusing really doesn’t require a lot of oil. You really probably don’t need any more than 6 drops of oil in your diffuser. It’s really strong if you add too much!
Here are some of my personal favorite recipes for everything from day-to-day life, to sick days.
On a side note, I don’t buy into the “essential oil wars” that are going on. I use mostly Eden’s Garden. There are some blends that each company has that are worth the buy for the exclusivity (Young Living’s RC and doTerra’s Balance are two of my favorite “name brand” EO’s).
Good Night blend
- 2 drops lavender
- 3 drops Roman Chamomile
- 1 drops vetiver
Good Morning blend
Allergy blend
- 2 drops lemon
- 2 drops peppermint
- 2 drops lavender
Cold Kicker blend
Calm Down blend
- 4 drops StressAway (or you can try out this one for a tiny fraction of the price)
- 2 drops lavender
Sweet Dreams blend
- 3 drops clary sage
- 3 drops cedarwood
Cold and Flu blend
- 2 drops Breathe (or you could give this one a try for much less)
- 2 drops OnGuard (thieves oil)
- 2 drops Melaleuca (tea tree oil)
Relax blend
Headache blend
- 2 drops lemongrass
- 1 drop peppermint
- 3 drops lavender
Mental Sharpness blend (use this for headaches and to help stay focused)
- 2 drops cypress
- 2 drops rosemary
- 2 drops juniper berry
You can also just diffuse singular essential oils on their own. I love using Good Night in my room before I go to bed.
What’s your favorite diffuser blend?
Would these also work in reed diffusers? I’d love to find a recipe to refill with… x
THIS is perfect! 🙂 My wife and I are buying ourselves a diffuser and essential oil starter kit for Christmas. We’re really excited. It will be fun to test some of these out. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the ideas, Caroline! I’m currently down with a sinus infection, so I’ve been diffusing Thieves like crazy, but you’ve given me some good ideas for other blends I can try!
This is seriously one of the best EO post I’ve read. You’ve covered it all!! Can’t wait to try all of these out 🙂
Wow – thanks for this list! I love using essential oils, but I am always afraid to experiment with different blends because some of the oils are so expensive! I like to make natural, sustainable soap (no coconut oil, shea butter oil, etc.) with tallow, lard or olive oils and am always looking for good scent combinations, so your list makes this much easier! Have a wonderfully merry Christmas!
PS: I found you on “This is how we roll” linky party – nice to meet you!
Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop
This is great – I asked for a couple of diffusers for my classrooms for Christmas, alas I did not get them BUT I will be pinning these recipes for when I do get them for myself! 🙂 I have always been a fan of having my work areas smell nice, and a diffuser with these oils seems to be the perfect way to do that. Thanks for sharing this post at Happiness Is Homemade this week!
Thanks, Katie! I was hesitant to buy a diffuser for some reason, but I’m so glad I got mine. I seriously use it every single night before I go to bed!
Caroline you just completely convinced me to buy an essential oil diffuser. Will definitely try all of your blends.

Caroline, Thank you for lot of great information about 101 . I thoroughly enjoyed getting introduced to young living oils through searching the web. I was considering do terra and have purchased many blends. I am considering switching and signing up with young living.
I’ve read both your roller article and this one and they are both great. I’ve gotten a starter kit from Eden’s Garden and really like it. If you had to choose say a good dozen, what are your “must haves” for oils? I have the Everyday Essential kit and want to add a few more, so I looking for some good options. Thx.
