5 Things My Family of 6 is Doing When We’re Quarantined – Everything that my big family is doing to combat boredom, cabin fever, illness, & stay on-budget while staying healthy and safe. Find out the best ways to save your wallet during times of panic, anxiety, and fear.
I had no intention of writing this today. But here I am because you know what, I feel like you need to know something.
First of all, I won’t downplay anything. There’s a situation going on no matter where you are. I’m not going to pretend like I have all the answers… because nobody does!
So what I am bringing you today is just knowing one thing for sure. I am not freaking out. I will not freak out. And no, it’s not because I feel invincible!
It’s because I know that my freaking out is not going to get me a better outcome.
The calmer I am, the more rational I can be… both with the money that I spend, and the energy that I have.
🤯 I have seen people on Instagram today talking about how they withdrew all of the contents of their bank account. 🤯 I’ve seen people sharing how they’re selling Purell hand sanitizer for $100 on Amazon. 🤯 I’ve talked to people who are freaking out and stockpiling their own houses. 🤯 I’ve seen people talk about fistfights over giant packs of toilet paper! 🤯 And – first hand this morning! – I’ve seen a crowd of people gathered outside of Aldi and Walmart before they open like it was Black Friday waiting for the doors to open so that they could trample the cashier inside.
This is legit. All of it.
👉👉 But listen to these words and repeat them to yourself over and over if you have to:
📣Freaking out isn’t going to help you… it’s only going to hurt you. Be calm, take a deep breath, take a step back and try to be logical.📣
Fear is a strong emotion that can throw you WAY off. It can hardcore drain the bank if you don’t pay attention.
Fear can make you – a totally rational human! – get into a fistfight at 9:03 am over a 48 pack of 1-ply toilet paper.
It can play you for a fool & make off with your money leaving you looking like a chump.
That’s why it’s so important NOT to let fear take over your life.
I know that things are scary and you can’t even escape the news (not on Instagram, Facebook, radio, TV… anywhere). But you need to know that there are people who will use this fear to their advantage to separate you from your money. And I don’t want that to happen to you!
5 Things My Family of 6 is Doing When We’re Quarantined
Let me share with you what I’m doing right now to get my family of 6 through this time without giving in to major panic, anxiety & fear:
1. 🍽️ EASY MEALS – MAKE ‘EM!
Beans and rice quesadillas? Yup. (No cheese? Make it enchiladas.)
Pasta and sauce. Frozen veggies. Rice. Corn tortillas. Ground beef. Canned fruits and veggies. Spaghetti and meatballs. Mac and cheese. Potatoes.
Still need more ideas? Head over to Google and type in: “best basic meals” or “easy weeknight dinners” or “easy dinners with [ingredient]”
Keep it simple and it’ll help a LOT.

2. 🗑️ WASTE NOTHING!
You have food at home. I do too! Now is the time to use it and use it well. The food from the pantry and freezer is there to use in times like this when the stores are empty and you don’t even want to leave the house.
Here are some of the things we’re doing:
Smoothies from the ends of fruit.
DIY chicken broth from veggie scraps.
If you’re sick of leftovers, freeze them and pick them back up later.
Adding rice to all of the dishes to make them last longer.
Googling: “simple/ easy/ basic recipes with [ingredient] and [ingredient]” <– try this out! It’s creative and works pretty well!
3. 🙅♀️ MINIMIZING CONTACT (extroverts: LISTEN HERE!)
Yes. My 4 kids, 3 cats, pup, hubby and I will all be staying away from people. Why? No, it’s not because I worry for our health. But because we have 2 cousins with cystic fibrosis, family recovering from chemotherapy, older family, and more people who are at the most risk.
My fellow extroverts!!! I KNOW THIS HURTS!! I, too, am bursting at the thought about not being around people! If this is you, go over to Instagram and comment on my stories. I’m in there EVERYDAY and I respond to comments!!!
4. 📝 USING THE FREE RESOURCES OF THE INTERNET!
Our school announced today that they’ll be closed for at least 2 weeks. So my kids are going to be having cabin fever. FAST.
Luckily, we had planned on homeschooling them in the past, so I’m very well versed in the art of… GOOGLING FREE STUFF.
Searches to make:
1. “Math activity sheets for [grade level or age]”
2. “Free coloring pages”
3. “Free homeschool curriculum for [grade or age]”
You can also use the app Libby (or Overdrive) if you have a library card to get FREE ebooks and audiobooks. (Yes, for free. Like, you download them and have them for 2 weeks.)
Oh, and of course… there’s no shame in using the Netflix Nanny! We’ve all got to work and need a break!
5. 📦 USE INTERNET-AGE FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES!!!!
Hello, Instacart & Walmart Grocery Pickup!
I usually don’t recommend Instacart because of the number of up-charges on your items (not a fan… I once paid more than 20% MORE on a Costco trip using Instacart).
BUT. This is exactly what these services were meant for and both of these services:
1. Let you never enter a store! (Can I get a WOOT for that?!)
2. Get groceries when you actually need them without blowing the budget!
Personally, I usually prefer Walmart Grocery Pickup because it’s the same low price as Walmart, without you ever having to set foot inside the store.
I made a video of what we got from Walmart grocery pickup and how easy it was (you can watch it HERE).
( And don’t forget Amazon Prime! I order all of my toilet paper with Subscribe & Save. Worth it. )
If you take NOTHING away from this post, let it be this:
📣The sky is NOT falling. Be careful and smart. Don’t go stockpiling up 2 48-packs of toilet paper for the 14 days that you’re going to be in the house. Don’t go buying things that aren’t going to help you just because everyone else is stocking up (be real – are you actually going to eat that can of Spam?! No? Then you shouldn’t get it even if it is the only meat left in the store).
🧘Here’s a positive mantra for your day:🧘
👍 I will not give in to fear. 👍 I will stay away from doom-and-gloom stories. 👍 I will bring love to people who need it. 👍 I can still get everything I need. 👍 I won’t lose the money I worked so hard for. 👍 This too shall pass. 👍 I’m going to go wash my hands.🧼😉
